I Love Being a Decorator!

by Nicola Rogers

Nicola Rogers, Interior Decorator, John Rogers RenovationsI wanted to be a decorator for as long as I can remember. I think I was around eight-years-old when I saw the Brady Bunch episode where Beebe Gallini wanted Mike Brady to design a pink powder puff factory.

I’m not sure how old I was when I saw Pillow Talk for the first time. Doris Day was an Interior Designer and Rock Hudson was a womanizer who hired her.

It has taken a long time to get here, but I have never lost my passion for Interior Design. It would have been great to enter the field as a twenty-something; I would have enjoyed it, but would my clients have benefited?

I’ve learned space planning in a classroom, and I’ve learned even more in my own home. We have a small house and a lot of kids, I don’t have the room for wasted space, and every square inch of my home is utilized to its fullest capacity.

I know what works and what doesn’t. I know which extra features are worth the money and which are just the latest fad.

Our homes are our nest; we want them to be comfortable, inviting, welcoming and relaxing. What a great feeling to come home to after a busy day of work or how wonderful for your children to have that sense of peace when they are home.

I love working with clients and pulling out of them what a room is to be used for, how they want to feel in that room and then of course help them figure out what style they like. For some this is easy. I’ve worked for clients who know exactly what they want and need my help finding those products and pulling it all together for a cohesive look. I’ve had clients who have no idea what they like, and I am able to help them step-by-step, holding their hand while making selections. And I’ve been fortunate to have a client who said “I trust you, you know what I like, just pick out what you think will look best”! The life experience I gained these last twenty-plus years as a wife and mother can’t be taught, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
